From Denial to the NFL: How Shamiel Gary Did It | ROK Podcast

Coach Sean Love Season 1 Episode 25

Former NFL safety and Tulsa native Shamiel Gary sits down with The ROK Podcast with Coach Love to share his inspirational story — one rooted in faith, resilience, and leadership.

A proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Shamiel was a standout on and off the field. After earning All-State honors, he began his college career at the University of Wyoming, where he quickly made his mark, leading the team in tackles as a freshman. But after the unexpected passing of his grandmother, he transferred closer to home to Oklahoma State University. There, he became a key leader in the Cowboys’ secondary, eventually earning a shot at the NFL.

Despite going undrafted, Shamiel carved out a professional career with multiple teams including the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, and Buffalo Bills. He opens up about the grind of making it in the league, battling for a roster spot, and navigating the highs and lows of pro football.

But his story doesn’t end on the field.

Shamiel talks about the identity crisis many athletes face after football, how he leaned into his faith, and why his life’s mission now centers around speaking, mentoring, and helping others find their purpose.

Whether you're an athlete, coach, parent, or just someone trying to find their lane — this episode is filled with raw truth, insight, and motivation from a man who’s lived every step of the journey.
